There are 3 ways, that we here at NMO, are orienteering!
1) Dead Reckoning -What you can see, you can negotiate towards. Here, onsite, we have great landmarks and a very 'Big Sky' with major vistas which make dead reckoning easy for hikes, etc, within 10 miles of NNO.
2) Map & Compass - This type of orienteering also employs dead reckoning, but is very effective, especially if the GPS fails (never yet). But, we know how to use a map & compass and always carry both ..in the unlikely event..
AND
3) GPS - I bet my life on a constant basis on my GPS. Even to say that I probably should have traded it on on a newer model because of more advanced screens, and maps showing more contour lines and colors and definition. BUT..you can't dynamite my Garmin Legend outta my hands!!
