Cloudcroft

Traveling North in the Tularosa Basin, high above White Sands, Alamagordo and Holloman Airbase at 9,000 ft is Cloudcroft. Actually a steep climb into the Lincoln National Forest in the Sacramento Mountains ..it's only 16 miles.

When we left Alamagordo it was 107 degrees in the desert. After ascending the 16 miles ..it was breezy and in the low 80's in Cloudcroft!

Hence, a true paradise developed by the railroad barrons in 1899 as a resort. It boasts a first class hotel resort facility, We stayed at The Lodge at Cloudcroft in the Pavillion ..which was the first building ..way back in the beginning of the 20th century.

Cloudcroft is also a ski resort with a modest but exciting hill only 2 miles from town. Exciting mostly because on it's summit, you're only 75 miles or so from the country of Mexico and skiing a hill that gets on average ..110 feet of snow per year.

There is also an 18 hole 'decorated' golf course, 4 tennis courts, fly fishing, hunting, backpacking, camping and a very nice 'period' commercial district. The Lodge ain't cheap..but has a first class restaurant ...also ain't cheap..but there are reasonable accommodations and food down the block in the commercial district. While having breakfast at The Lodge ..we video'd a bull elk with it's Spring antlers, who had come for a sip from the pond. This is not at all unusual a sight in Cloudcroft. Watch video below.

All in all ..we'll be going back to Cloudcroft. I has an amazing residential section with very old cabins and also very new ..um..mansion/cabins. Really a place to visit, as the Texans have discovered ..for every 5 vehicles..3 of them have Texas tags.!

Be absolutely sure, at The Lodge, to ask for the key to 'The Tower'..where you can get an astounding view of the Tularosa Basin, Alamagordo and White Sands!
